Important Update: NinjaOne Backup & Microsoft Exchange Online Changes

NinjaOne Backup

Microsoft has announced upcoming changes to Exchange Online, and NinjaOne has proactively prepared to ensure continuous backup protection for Microsoft 365 customers.

This update is important for all partners and customers using NinjaOne SaaS Backup with Exchange Online.

What’s Changing

Microsoft plans to retire Exchange Web Services (EWS) and moving to Microsoft Graph APIs for Exchange Online in October 2026.

  • NinjaOne has already prepared for this change
  • Backup coverage for customer data will continue uninterrupted
  • NinjaOne is working closely with Microsoft to ensure a smooth transition

⚠️ Important: This change applies only to Microsoft 365 / Exchange Online
On‑premises Exchange Server is NOT impacted

Why Microsoft Is Making This Change

Following the Midnight Blizzard security incident in 2024, Microsoft accelerated efforts to:

  • Improve security posture
  • Remove legacy EWS dependencies
  • Enforce modern authentication and least‑privilege access

As part of this shift, Microsoft is moving services from EWS to Microsoft Graph APIs.

NinjaOne’s engineering and product teams have collaborated closely with Microsoft throughout this process to align with these modern security standards.

How NinjaOne Is Responding

NinjaOne is:

  • Migrating all backup functionality from EWS to Microsoft Graph APIs
  • Aligning with modern authentication patterns
  • Maintaining a secure, reliable backup experience
  • Ensuring no loss of features during the transition

What to Expect Next

No action is required right now

However, to maintain authentication and backup access:

Mandatory Action Before June 2026

  • All Microsoft 365 tenants will be required to re‑authorize NinjaOne to provide Microsoft Graph access
  • This ensures continued authentication once EWS is fully retired

What you may see

  • A banner notification inside the NinjaOne portal if re‑authorization is required
  • A pop‑up prompt on login guiding you through the re‑authentication process

If this is not completed before the deadline, backup authentication may be impacted.
