Earlier this year, one of our partners got a call from a customer who had been hacked. It didn’t stay contained. The attack reached the customer’s supply chain partners and put important relationships at risk.
The fix was an upgrade to Microsoft 365 Business Premium, with conditional access and a proper set of security controls switched on. It worked. But the upgrade happened after the damage.
That story sums up the problem. Most SMBs still sit on Business Standard or lower, and most of them don’t know what they’re missing until something goes wrong.
The conversation has shifted
For MSPs, the question is no longer whether to offer Business Premium. It’s how to position it.
Business Standard covers productivity well. Email, Teams, Word, Excel. But it doesn’t include Intune or Windows Autopilot, and it leaves big gaps across identity, endpoint and data protection. Customers fill those gaps with separate tools. Antivirus from one vendor, MFA from another, email filtering from a third. Each one renews at a different time, and none of them talk to each other.
Business Premium brings those layers into one licence for businesses under 300 seats:
Why Standard is getting harder to defend
Australian SMBs are now answering to more than just their IT provider. Essential Eight, SMB1001 certification and cyber insurance questionnaires all ask about the same things: MFA, patching, endpoint protection, device management and privileged access.
Business Premium gives you controls that line up with those requirements. Just as importantly, it gives you evidence. When an auditor or insurer asks for proof, you can show it. With Standard, you’re stitching together answers from several separate tools.
Three ways to earn on every customer
This is where Business Premium gets interesting for MSPs. Every customer you move across creates three revenue streams:
Stop selling licences one at a time. Sell the outcome.
Two sales motions you can start now
Use renewals as your trigger. As customers on Standard come up for renewal, position the upgrade then. It’s the natural moment to review what they have and what they’re missing.
Lead with secure AI. Many customers are already curious about Copilot. Position Business Premium with the Copilot Business bundle as a secure AI package, so the security foundation arrives with the productivity gains. For customers with heavier compliance needs, add Purview for a complete package.

Bring your tricky questions too. Mixing Standard and Premium in one tenant, upgrading partway through a term, adding Copilot, or setting up Defender in Intune or the Security portal are all fair game in the live Q&A.
